Jada Pinkett Smith says that despite Tupac Shakur being her soulmate, she couldn’t get together with him due to a lack of chemistry.
In a new interview with RollingOut, the 52-year-old actor discussed her bond with Shakur, who was killed in a drive-by shooting in 1996.
“There are all kinds of definitions of ‘soulmates,'” Pinkett Smith told RollingOut. “If there is such a thing as past lives, I definitely think that Pac and I have traveled a few together.”
When asked if she wished she had continued their relationship with the late hip-hop artist, Pinkett Smith brushed the idea off.
“It just wasn’t possible. There was no chemistry between us,” the actor said.
She continued that the relationship between Pinkett Smith and Shakur was not romantic but rather a “friendship-love chemistry” that made them a “dynamic duo.”
“It was like God made us that way. It was like, ‘Look, I’m going to put you all together, right?” she told RollingOut. “‘But I’m going to tell you right now, I’m going to make it so you all are not going to be able to get together because that just wasn’t the purpose.”

Pinkett Smith and Tupac Shakur both attended The Baltimore School of Arts in the 1980s. The actor spoke on the first time she met Shakur at school in an old, undated interview video that circulated online.
“It was the first day and he came over to me and introduced himself. And in high school, Pac was a little funny-looking,” Pinkett Smith said in the interview clip. “But as soon as he approached me, he was like a magnet. Once you paid attention to him he kind of sucked you in. And we hit it off from that moment on.”
This is not the first time Pinkett Smith has stated that she and Shakur have no chemistry.
On The Howard Stern Show in 2015, the actor admitted that when they were younger, she once requested Shakur to kiss her.
“And when I tell you, it had to be the most disgusting kiss for us both,” Pinkett Smith told Howard Stern.
A year after Shakur’s passing, in 1997, Pinkett Smith wed Will Smith. In 2020, Smith acknowledged feeling resentful of his wife’s friendship with Shakur.
